Auto-Play & Timing Editor

Learn how to play back recorded tabs, control speed, loop, and fine-tune timing with the timing editor.

Auto-Play & Timing Editor

Auto-Play allows you to listen to your recorded tabs, while the Timing Editor lets you fine-tune the timing between notes. This guide covers both features in detail.

Understanding Auto-Play

Auto-Play plays back your recorded tabs automatically, using the timing data captured during recording. It's perfect for:

  • Listening to your recordings
  • Learning songs by ear
  • Practicing along with playback
  • Reviewing your performances

Using Auto-Play

Prerequisites

Auto-Play requires:

  • A recorded tab (with timing data)
  • Recorded notes array in tab data
  • Recording duration information

Note: Manually edited tabs may not have timing data. Use Record feature to capture timing.

Step 1: Record a Tab

1. Click Record button2. Play your notes/chords3. Click Stop4. Tab now has timing data

Step 2: Access Auto-Play Controls

Auto-Play controls appear in Tab Display:

  • Below Tutorial Controls
  • Only visible when tab has recorded notes
  • Includes: Play, Pause, Stop, Speed, Loop, Timeline

Step 3: Play Your Recording

1. Click Play button (green triangle)2. Notes play automatically in sequence3. Timeline shows progress4. Current note highlighted

Auto-Play Controls

Play/Pause Button

  • Play: Starts playback from current position

Speed Control

  • Options: 0.5x, 0.75x, 1x, 1.25x, 1.5x, 2x
  • Default: 1x (normal speed)
  • Use:
  • 0.5x-0.75x: Slow down for learning
  • 1x: Normal playback speed
  • 1.25x-2x: Speed up for review

Tip: Use slower speeds when learning difficult passages.

Loop Toggle

  • Off: Plays once and stops
  • On: Repeats continuously
  • Visual: Purple highlight when active
  • Use: For practice and repetition

Timeline/Seek Bar

  • Shows: Current position and total duration
  • Format: MM:SS.MS (minutes:seconds.milliseconds)
  • Interactive: Click to jump to any position
  • Visual: Green progress bar

Timeline Features

Current Time Display

  • Width: Represents position (0% to 100%)
  • Smooth: Updates continuously

Understanding Timing

How Timing Works

During recording:

  • Each note gets a timestamp (ms from start)
  • Gaps between notes create timing
  • System calculates dash count (1 or 2 dashes)
  • Timing preserved in recorded notes array

Base Timing

  • 1 dash = ~100ms gap
  • 2 dashes = ~200ms+ gap
  • Note duration = ~200ms per note
  • Total duration = sum of all timing

Speed Multiplier

When you change speed:

  • 0.5x: Plays at half speed (2x slower)
  • 2x: Plays at double speed (2x faster)
  • Timing preserved: Relative timing stays same

Timing Editor

When to Use Timing Editor

Use Timing Editor when:

  • Timing feels off after recording
  • Notes are too close together
  • Notes are too far apart
  • You want precise control

Accessing Timing Editor

1. Ensure tab has recorded notes2. Click Edit Timing button (purple button)3. Timing Editor opens as modal4. Visual timeline interface appears

Timing Editor Interface

Components:

  • Timeline: Visual representation of all notes
  • Note Markers: Each note shown as marker
  • Time Labels: Shows exact timestamps
  • Drag Handles: Adjust timing by dragging
  • Play Controls: Test timing changes

Editing Timing

Method 1: Drag Notes1. Hover over note marker2. Drag left or right3. Timing updates in real-time4. Preview by playing

Method 2: Adjust Gaps1. Select note2. Adjust gap before/after3. Fine-tune timing4. Apply changes

Timing Editor Tips

1. Start Small: Make small adjustments first2. Test Frequently: Play back to hear changes3. Focus on Problem Areas: Edit sections that need work4. Maintain Flow: Keep natural rhythm5. Save Changes: Click Save when satisfied

Advanced Auto-Play Features

Playback from Specific Time

Troubleshooting

Q: Auto-Play not available?A: Ensure tab has recorded notes. Manually edited tabs may not have timing data.

Q: Playback too fast/slow?A: Adjust Speed control. Use 0.5x for slow, 2x for fast.

Q: Timing seems off?A: Use Timing Editor to fine-tune. Or re-record with more consistent tempo.

Q: Can't seek to specific time?A: Click directly on timeline bar. Ensure tab has duration data.

Q: Loop not working?A: Make sure Loop button is highlighted (purple). Click to toggle.

Q: Notes not playing in order?A: Check that recorded notes have correct timestamps. Re-record if needed.

Best Practices

1. Record Consistently: Maintain steady tempo for better timing2. Use Slower Speeds: Learn at 0.5x-0.75x before full speed3. Edit Timing: Use Timing Editor for precision4. Practice with Loop: Repeat difficult sections5. Combine Features: Use Auto-Play with Learn Mode
